Daycare: Is It A Business For You?

How do you know if doing daycare is for you? The answer to these questions will give you a good idea whether or not to consider starting a home based daycare business.

 Do I enjoy spending time with children? If you don't like spending time with children, playing with and teaching them, then this is not a business for you. I personally feel very strongly about this. Daycare is not something that you should do just to make money. You should want to spend time with the children and have fun doing it! Daycare is a stressful business, which is made worse if you don't want to be doing it!

Do you have the time? This may sound like a ridiculous question, but it is a valid one. Providing daycare means working long hours and possibly different shifts, depending on what you have decided to offer the parents. Because they are travelling to your home, then to work, that is added time for both you and them. If they start work at 7am and have to travel a ½ hr to your home that means you will have them that extra time at both ends. My daycare hours were from 5:30 am till 6pm. Monday-Friday. These were the hours that I chose to work. That way, I was able to offer my services to more people!

Do I have the room? You need to consider where the children will play, eat and sleep. In my own daycare, I used the basement for free play and nap time. That way, I was free to do what I needed to do while they were sleeping, and they also had a nice quiet place to sleep. I used the kitchen table for lunchtime and snack time, and to do crafts., My living room was used for circle time and story time! I had a fair-sized fully fenced backyard with a locked gate for the children to play safely in!
